## The challenge

Trupanion Certification started on an off-the-shelf LMS priced per user. That was fine for a pilot, but untenable for a credential meant to reach an entire profession. At the audience Trupanion was aiming for, license fees alone would have run into the hundreds of thousands — billed for every account, whether or not anyone ever watched a video. Every new sign-up made the program more expensive, which is the opposite of what a growth program should do.

And growth was the whole point — the course teaches veterinary teams how to use Trupanion’s tools and talk confidently about coverage. The more clinics that take it, the easier it becomes for them to support clients, submit invoices, and get pets the care they need.

There was a second challenge underneath the first. The credential had to mean something. It needed enough rigor to hold up as a real certification, while staying short and focused enough for a busy practice to finish between appointments. And it had to work equally well in English and French.

## Our approach

Rather than negotiate a better seat price, we built Trupanion a learning platform of its own. Removing per-user licensing changed the economics of the entire program: certifying the 40,000th professional costs no more than certifying the first.

From there, the goal was a path simple enough to finish and rigorous enough to trust. The platform runs on one clear sequence: watch the material, then prove it. Learners sign up in seconds with email or Google login, move through short video lessons, and earn the credential by passing an assessment after each one. We built the assessment engine too, pairing multiple-choice questions with interactive, click-based ones that ask learners to show what they know rather than just pick an answer. Every lesson and question is available in English and French, so the credential carries the same weight for every practice Trupanion serves.

Trupanion’s team wrote the course. We animated it in After Effects and built the platform that delivers it — around 25 minutes of video across seven subject areas. Because the same team that built the assessment engine also made the footage that feeds it, the lessons and the questions were designed to work together from day one. That’s rare. Most programs split video production and LMS development across separate vendors and live with the seams.

And we didn’t hand it off at launch. DAS continues to run the platform today, keeping the program steady as it grows.

## The outcome

More than 40,000 veterinary professionals now hold the Trupanion Certified credential, and every one of them earned it by demonstrating what they learned, not just by clicking through. That’s what lets the credential carry real weight in English and French alike. Graduates finish the program equipped to practice their best medicine with fewer financial constraints, simplify how they submit claims, and confidently introduce pet medical insurance to clients.

For Trupanion, building instead of renting changed what the number means. Under per-seat licensing, 40,000 certified professionals would have been a line item to manage. On a platform Trupanion owns, it’s a milestone — and the program can reach as much of the profession as Trupanion wants without the cost climbing alongside it.
